You are invited to the Fall "Promoting Healthy Weight Colloquium. Infancy:  Nutrition, Physical Activity, Parenting and Mothers' Experiences." The Colloquium is offered by the University of Tennessee Public Health Nutrition Program on Friday, September 25, 2009 from 12:30 pm-4:30 pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time at the Howard Baker Center on the UT campus. The conference will be webcast live also! There is no cost to participate, but registration is required.

This colloquium will highlight infancy and how parenting, nutrition, and physical activity relate to healthy weight gain during this first developmental stage of Bright Futures. Colloquium presentations are intended for researchers, practitioners, and family members. Presenters will be:

"Hot Topics" in Pediatric Nutrition On-Line Education

"Hot Topics" in pediatric nutrition this year focuses on medical aspects that can impact childhood obesity. The first 2 speakers present the role of sleep and early feeding and their impact on obesity in later childhood. The final presentation focuses on the role of genetics in determining the risk for pediatric obesity.

ADVANCED Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Behavioral Counseling Institute

This institute is designed for dietitians and nurses working in a clinical setting who would like to increase their skills in counseling patients and their families,

  • Emphasis on treating childhood obesity but will be applicable to all counseling settings
  • Individuals participating should have basic skills in behavioral counseling/MI
  • Training includes a 2-1/2 day on-site institute that will allow participants to practice clinical skills and receive feedback
  • Pre-institute work includes reading articles and video viewing.
  • Each participant will be expected to send in a tape of a 10-15 minute interview before attending the on-site program.
  • Participants will receive individual feed back on their counseling skills
